Life in the City and Life in the Country
1.Let’s talk about life in the city and life in the
country. Where would you like to live: in the country or in the city? Why
(not)?
Today people all over the world are moving out of
small towns in the country to go and live in big, noisy cities. They are moving
from the peaceful hills, fields, rivers and streams of the countryside to the
busy world of streets, buildings, traffic and crowds. This movement from rural
areas to urban areas has been going on for over 200 years.
Living in a city has both advantages and
disadvantages. On the plus side, it’s often easier to find work, and there is
usually a wide choice of public transport, so you don’t need to own a car. In
every big city, you can also find all sorts of entertainment such as cinemas,
clubs, museums, parks and so on. What is more, if you fall ill, a
hospital or a chemist’s shop will be situated near your home in the city, and
if you live in the country, it will be hard to find any medical help quickly.
However, for every plus there is a minus. For one
thing, you might have a job, but unless it is well-paid, you will not be able
to afford many of the things that there are to do, because living in a city is
often very expensive. What is more, public transport is sometimes crowded and
dirty, particularly in the rush hour, and even the parks can become very
crowded, especially on Sundays when it seems that every city-dweller is looking
for some open space and green grass. That’s why people try to do everything to
go to the countryside because only there they can find quietness. Every holiday
and every weekend people try to leave their houses and go to the country.
Last of all, the ecological situation in towns is
awful because there are a lot of industrial objects and factories there.
In conclusion, I can say that I prefer to live in a
big city because everything I need in my everyday life is at hand, but also I
like to spend my holidays in the country because after living in the city for
about 9 months I start getting tired.
2.What questions will you ask your friend about the
place where he/she lives?
1) What
type of house do you live in?
2) Is your house/flat
spacious enough?
3) Is your house/flat
suitable for pets?
4) What makes your
house/flat special?
5) Does your house/flat
lack anything?
3.Your friend doesn’t know what to choose: to live in
the country or in the city. Give him/her some advice.
If you live in the country you breathe fresh air, you
are close to nature, your life is not stressful, and there is less crime in the
countryside. You can save money because you can grow your own vegetables and
fruit. Children can explore and play outside in reasonable safety. The
disadvantages of living in the countryside are: little or no entertainment,
lack of public transport, poor shopping facilities.
The advantages of living in big cities are: a lot of
entertainment (you can visit theatres, cinemas, clubs, galleries, museums,
concerts). There are good shopping facilities, large department stores,
shopping malls, supermarkets. It easier to find a good well-paid job, as the
range of jobs is greater than in a village. Besides, in the city people have
more chances to succeed. Citizens of large towns get better education because
they can attend preparatory courses and lectures; there are universities, technical
schools, vocational schools. It is easier to find a tutor if you need one.
4.East
or West, home is best. Do you agree with it?
As people go through life, there are many things that
may have been and gone, such as friends and lovers. However, family always
stays constant in their mind. No matter what we will be or how we act, we still
love home. As the saying goes‟East or West, home is best”, home is the first and the
last thing coming onto our mind because under any circumstances, it is the safe
and sound place for everyone. The greatest beauty of home is in its spiritual
and emotional love. Home is undoubtedly each individual’s origin and haven,
where they can find calm and protection.
