Belarusian National Cuisine
1. Now let’s talk about food. What do Belarusian people
eat?
Modern Belarusian cookery is based on old national
traditions. Dishes from potatoes are very common in Belarusian cuisine.
Potatoes are called "the second bread" in Belarus. There are special
potato cafes in the country where you can try various potato dishes. Potatoes
are included into many salads, served together with mushrooms, meat; different
pirazhki (patties) and baked puddings are made from it. The most popular among
the Belarusians are traditional draniki, thick pancakes, prepared from shredded
potatoes. A lot of place in the diet of the Belarusians belongs to meat and
meat products, especially to the pork and salted pork fat. Belarusians eat
fresh, dried, salted and pickled mushrooms, and also berries such as bilberry,
wild strawberries, raspberries, cranberry and some others. Zatirka is the most
popular of flour dishes. Pieces of specially prepared dough are boiled in water
and then poured over with milk. An integral part of any dinner is soup. It can
be hot or cold. Belarusians are fond of borscht, a thick and rich beet and
cabbage soup made with grains, potato and meat. The Belarusian khaladnik, a
cold borscht made of beets, beet leaves and served with sour cream, hard-boiled
eggs, and boiled potatoes will be pleasantоn a hot summer day. Various salads are prepared
from cabbage, carrots, beans.
2. Do
you like cooking? Why (not)?
It is true: I absolutely love cooking. I am not
sure what it is, but when I am in the kitchen, I suddenly feel at home.
Firstly, everyone loves food. If you can make
tasty recipes and dishes, then people think that you are awesome. This works
especially well when you are hanging out with people that don’t know how to
cook – they look at you like an absolute genius!
Secondly, I like to cook because I want to let others eat my
cooking products. I want to see their face with a smile when they feel my
dishes are tasty and good. I would feel happy when I see their smile and eating
happily. Since those dishes are being cooked by my hard, heart and love. I hope
that they can feel it.
Finally, some people say they can’t cook. But you know
what? I don’t believe them. Cooking is EASY. Cooking delicious, tasty dishes is
EASY. Why? There is this thing called recipes. It is fool-proof. If you follow
a recipe, then you will inevitably make a nice dish.
3.What
questions can your British friend ask you about our cuisine?
1) How many meals a day do you have?
2) What do you usually have for breakfast/lunch/dinner?
3) What
national dishes can you cook by yourself?
4) What’s your favourite dish?
5) Are you fond of fast food?
4. Which
cafes would you recommend to visit in your place? Why?
As you step through the doors of Kamyanitsa,
you'll immediately find yourself in another century, saturated with the spirit
of knighthood and an atmosphere of medieval hospitality. It's simply one of the best places to try
traditional Belarusian cuisine including fresh homemade bread, cold
"kvas" and many delicious dishes.
Located in the city centre, Lido provides
visitors with a variety of healthy and tasty meals. As it's self-service, you
select your meal from a range of pre-prepared dishes instead of ordering from a
menu. This also means that you get your food quicker! Unfortunately there
aren’t many places in Minskserving traditional Belarusian cuisine, but Lido is
a rare and reasonably priced exception. Moreover, if you're in a hurry you can order your food
to-go.
5. A
lot of pupils refuse to have meals at school. What do you think about it?
I think a snack in the middle of a school day
can do you a lot of good. Unfortunately, school meals leave much to be desired.
As for me, I usually ignore the main dish in favour of a cup of tea with a
roll.
